Herbert John Dadswell's story

Herbert John Dadswell was one of four sons of James Harry and Elizabeth (Ackrill) Dadswell. He was born at Hastings, Sussex, in 1895.

The 1901 census shows the five-year-old Herbert living with his family at Bishops Waltham, and in 1911 living with a widowed aunt at Smithwick, near Birmingham, and learning fitting at an iron foundry. He was aged 15 at this time.

In 1913, when he was 18, he left England for Australia under a youth migration scheme which aimed to bring young people to live and work in Australia.

He was working on a farm at Strezlecki, Victoria, in 1916 when he enlisted in the Australian Infantry Forces for service in World War One. He was 21 and single when he sailed on the troopship HMAT Ballarat from Melbourne on 19 February 1917. He served as a private with the 5th Battalion, 24th Reinforcements, and was wounded in action in France in April 1918. Repatriation back to Australia followed in 1919.

Following the war he worked as a motor trimmer (upholsterer), living at Balaclava, Melbourne. In 1920 he married Eva Margery Hope Stevens, daughter of John Charles and Margery (Rawlings) Stevens of Penshurst, Victoria. They had three daughters, Doreen, Betty Margery (Gery) and Billie, and lived in Melbourne.

All the family sailed to England aboard the ship Orvieto in 1928 where Herbert Dadswell took over the family farm at Bishops Waltham, Hampshire following the retirement of his father James Dadswell.

The family returned to Australia in 1946 (Billie) and 1947 (Herbert, Eva, Doreen and Betty).

Herbert John Dadswell died at his home in Murrumbeena, Melbourne, on 30 January 1981. Eva died at Pambula, NSW six years later, in 1987.
