Elena Ivy's story

Elena Ivy Dadswell

Elena Ivy Dadswell was the second child of Charles Thomas and Susan (Broadwood) Dadswell. She was born at Horsham on 25 December 1895.

Ivy (as she was known to family and friends) married three times - firstly at St Andrew's Manse, Warracknabeal on 11 October 1917 to Francis Day, son of Edward and Catherine (Leonard) Day. Francis was a labourer who was born and usually lived at Mt Gambier, South Australia. At the time of their marriage, Francis Day was 29 (that is, born about 1888) while Elena Ivy was 21. The couple had one child, Monica Jean Day, who was born at Horsham in May 1918. The couple divorced in mid-1927.

Shortly after, Ivy (Day) married, secondly, at the Presbyterian Manse, Horsham on 1 July 1927 Reinhold Müller, son of John August and Augusta (Wiese) Müller. At the time of the marriage, Reinhold was a driver aged 50 (that is, born at Horsham about 1877). In 1930, they had a son, Leslie Donald Müller. Reinhold Müller died at Horsham in 1935 at the age of 58.

About 1944 at Horsham, Ivy (Müller) married Walter Rudolph Hartmann, son of Max Rudolph and Frieda Elise (Puls) Hartmann. Ivy and Walter lived at Haven, about three kilometres south of Horsham until Walter's death there in 1962 at the age of 70.

Ivy later moved to David Street, Horsham, and lived there until her death from cancer at the age of 71 on 29 September 1967. She was buried in the Horsham Cemetery, in the same grave as her husband Walter Hartmann.

Friends remembered Ivy for her dedicated work for charitable organisations - she was a member of the Wimmera Base Hospital Ladies' Auxiliary, Horsham Red Cross, Wimmera District Ambulance Service Auxiliary and an enthusiastic worker for Horsham RSL.

After her death, the Wimmera District Ladies' Auxiliary paid the following tribute:

"She was a staunch supporter of the auxiliary for many years. Although her health had been steadily deteriorating for some time, she maintained unstinting interest and participation in fund-raising activity. Her bright and cheerful personality will be sadly missed by the committee."
