Charlotte Martha's story

Headstone on grave of Martha Dadswell

Charlotte Martha Ulricke Dadswell was the first child of Thomas William and Helena Aurora (Scheer) Dadswell. She was born on 12 July 1858 at Vere Street, Collingwood, an inner-Melbourne suburb. Thomas registered the birth at Collingwood, indicating that this was the family home at the time.

Martha would have been with her parents as they moved around Victoria - firstly to Moorabool near Geelong, then to Pleasant Creek (now known as Stawell) followed by Ledcourt Crossing (now known as Dadswells Bridge).

At the age of 16, Martha contracted measles and after a five-day illness died at Ledcourt Crossing, on 21 May 1875. Henry Dadswell of Red Cliffs (1894-1978) believed Martha had become ill when nursing other members of the family, most likely her brother Otto who had been seriously injured when horse riding about this time. She was buried two days after her death in the Stawell Cemetery.

Her grave is alongside the grave of her mother Helena Aurora Dadswell who had died two years earlier, and one of her sisters, Emma Elizabeth (Dadswell) Bell, who died in 1955.
