Charlotte Martha's story

Charlotte Martha Ulricke (Martha) Dadswell was the first child of Thomas and Helena Dadswell.

She was born on 12 July 1858 at Vere Street, Collingwood, an inner-Melbourne suburb. Thomas registered the birth at Collingwood, indicating that this was the family home at the time.

Martha would have been with her parents as they moved around Victoria - firstly to Geelong, and then to Pleasant Creek (now known as Stawell) and to Ledcourt (now known as Dadswells Bridge).
Grave of Martha Dadswell
At the age of 16, Martha contracted measles and after a five-day illness died at Ledcourt on 21 May 1875.

Henry Dadswell of Red Cliffs (1894-1978) believed Martha had been nursing other members of the family, most likely her brother Otto who had been seriously injured when horse riding, when she became ill.

She was buried two days later in the Stawell Cemetery. Her grave is alongside the grave of her mother, who had died two years earlier, and one of her sisters.
