Robert Dadswell's story

Grave of Robert and Sarah Dadswell

Robert Dadswell was the only child of Robert and Ann (Ovenden) Dadswell. He was baptised on 9 July 1773. Robert farmed at Rotherfield, had two marriages and produced 16 children.

His first marriage was on 17 February 1795 to Mary Finch, daughter of blacksmith Edward Finch. Robert and Mary lived at The Beeches, Rotherfield, and had 12 children, all baptised at Rotherfield.

Following Mary's death in 1820, Robert at the age of about 48 married a second time, to Ann (family name unknown, aged about 17), probably in 1821. The couple had four children.

Robert died on 5 January 1853 and left property to his wife Ann and children. When Ann died in 1876, many of the family properties (Beeches Farm, Blackness, Toll Wood, Pellings, Cranes) were sold to settle the estate.

Robert and Mary are ancestors of a number of Dadswell families who migrated to Australia: 1.Frederick Dadswell of Adelaide 2.Arthur James (Jim) Dadswell of Melbourne 3.Sydney Dadswells including Lyndon & Eric Dadswell and 4.Lewis Dadswell of Perth.
