Charles Edward Dadswell's story

Charles Edward Dadswell was born on 23 September 1870 in Uckfield, Sussex, to Thomas and Emma (Dyer) Dadswell. Emma died that same year, possibly as a result of complications from the birth.
Dadswell family newspaper report 1873
There is some mystery about the whereabouts of Charles during the 1871 census. His father Thomas is shown living as a widower with his sister Eliza, but the six-month-old Charles is not listed in this household. It appears the six-month-old child identified as 'Thomas Charles Dadswell' living with Thomas' brother Edward and his family could in fact be Charles Edward Dadswell.

In 1873, at the age of two, Charles emigrated to Australia with his father and stepmother (Emily Ann Dadswell), disembarking in Adelaide in December with a large number of other migrants. The family lived in Adelaide where Charles went to school, eventually attending South Australian Commercial College.

About 1890, Charles moved to Victoria and on 2 March 1892, when he was living at St Kilda, he married Florence Amelia Hayes, daughter of Charles Dyer and Jane (Mann) Hayes. At this time Charles was a 21-year-old bookkeeper. The couple had two children.

Electoral records list Charles in 1909 as a (commercial) traveller living at 74 Melville Street, Hawthorn, as a traveller living at Beaver Street, Malvern in 1919, a traveller living at 4 Toorak Road, Camberwell in 1936. His 1951 death certificate listed him as a 81-year-old company director, living as a widower at 4 Toorak Road, Camberwell. His wife Florence died when they were living at Malvern in 1942 - she was then aged 70.
